Gale-force winds and torrential rain ravaged the city. The Hudson River surged, submerging subway stations. The hospital had initiated a "Code Black" emergency protocol—backup generators hummed, and all non-essential surgeries were canceled.

Carmela was wheeled into the operating room. Her condition was worse than anticipated.
